Choosing between Debt Consolidation Programs

Debt is a growing problem in today's world, and it's easy to see why. Many people carry multiple credit cards, with balances in the thousands. This, combined with other sources of debt like educational loans and medical bills, can add up to a staggering total. If you're looking for relief, one place to start is with one of the many debt consolidation programs available.

Some of these programs cost money to use, while others are free. Consumer Credit Counseling is a non-profit agency that offers a variety of free programs including debt consolidation. When you go to CCC for your initial consultation, you will be asked to bring all your bills with you. Your monthly expenses will be added up and a total will be determined. Then, a monthly payment which you will pay to the agency will be established. They will split the money up between your creditors and handle all communication. This means you won't have to deal with any more uncomfortable collection calls. The agency will pay off your debts over a period of time, and even counsel you on rebuilding and maintaining good credit.

There are many debt consolidation companies that work just like CCC does, but are not free. Most of the time, you'll be charged a monthly fee for their services. You've probably seen advertisements for these companies all over the television and Internet. While they can certainly help make getting out of debt faster and easier, they don't do anything that you can't do on your own. However, many people find that dealing with these companies is worth the expense because it saves them lots of time and hassle. Like CCC, these companies will work with your creditors to come up with solutions that are favorable to everyone and may even save you money.

A consumer seeking debt consolidation programs will find there's a lot of selection out there. How can you possibly know which company would be best for you? The first thing you should do is make a list of the companies you're considering. Check into the Better Business Bureau and make sure each one has a favorable rating and no complaints. A search engine query may also lead you to any pertinent information about the companies and programs you're considering. A little research now can help you choose the best program, and save you a lot of trouble and expense later!
